How Hard Is It ACTUALLY to Start a Business in Chicago?

Everybody online makes starting a business sound really simple.

Just "get an LLC," build a website, and start making money. Like it's some kind of 3-step process.

But I wanted to see what it actually looks like in a real city, so I looked into starting a business in Chicago.

And it turns out it's a lot more complicated than people think.

Let's say you have a simple idea. A coffee shop, a gym, a clothing brand, a barber shop. Whatever.

In your head, the process looks like: you form an LLC, rent a space, and open your doors.

But the LLC part is basically just the beginning. It doesn't mean you have a functioning business yet.

After that, you still need an EIN, a business bank account, bookkeeping setup, and depending on what you're doing, insurance, licenses, and tax registrations. So even before you make a dollar, there's already a checklist stacking up.

Chicago adds another layer on top of that.

Once you actually try to operate somewhere, you run into zoning. Zoning is the city deciding what types of businesses are allowed in certain buildings or areas. So you can find a great location, sign a lease, be ready to go, and then find out your business isn't even allowed there.

You can commit to paying rent before you're even allowed to operate.

Then comes permits and inspections.

Depending on what kind of business you're starting, you might need city licenses, building permits, fire inspections, health inspections, signage approvals, sometimes multiple rounds of all of that. None of it is instant. It can take weeks or even months before you're legally allowed to open your doors.

So while you're waiting, you're still paying for everything. Rent, utilities, contractors, equipment. But you're not making any money yet.

That's the part people don't really talk about.

Starting a business isn't just about building something people want. It's about surviving the process of getting permission to operate it.

I think that's why a lot of people never actually get started. Not because the idea is bad, but because the system is heavy.

But people do it every day. Every coffee shop you walk into, every small store, every gym, someone had to go through all of that just to open those doors.

It's not impossible. It's just more real than the internet makes it seem.

And once you see that, you realize starting a business isn't just a creative thing. It's a patience game, a paperwork game, and a survival game.

That's what it actually looks like.
